Jewell M. Kutzer was born at an early age – – well, she was – in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. And that town has become famous because of her. Well – there was that other young feller that she was in school with. His name was Andy Griffith. Their hometown was Mount Airy, North Carolina, and Andy used it as his inspiration for Mayberry for the beloved television series, The Andy Griffith Show. Jewell really identified with the show, since her grandfather was the real Justice of the Peace and Jewell, like TV's Opie, made the jail her playground.
Jewell has been accused of coming out of the womb talking. Could be, because she gave her first public recitation at the age of five. That same year she stood on a box to reach the microphone to sing on the radio. Her mother said that when Jewell dropped her pocketbook, and didn't try to pick it up, she knew she had a real "ham" on her hands.
